PRNewswire - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has launched the "Know Before You Go, Get Your Passport" campaign, aimed at preparing United States citizens for upcoming changes to travel document requirements. CBP processed over 422 million arriving individuals last year, including over 87 million international air arrivals.

CBP is encouraging the traveling public, particularly college students who may be planning spring break trips to Mexico, Canadian visitors and families who may be planning hunting, skiing or family trips this winter to get their passports as soon as possible. CBP also recommends learning about regulations on food, alcohol, and agricultural goods before traveling to help ensure a smoother process upon arrival.

Here are a few tips for travelers:

• If you are traveling by air after January 23, 2006, make sure you obtain a passport, particularly if going to Canada, Mexico, or Bermuda, as passports will be required for re-entry.
• Make sure that you have the proper travel documents both for the country you are visiting, as well as for your return to the United States.
• If you are headed overseas, learn about the country or countries you are visiting and any local conditions that might affect your trip by consulting www.travel.state.gov/. You can also use the site to register your trip and have travel information sent directly to your email address.
• Make sure you find out the rules and regulations concerning food and agricultural items before you travel, as some are prohibited or must meet certain requirements, such as a license or permit.
• Make sure you follow the directions on the CBP Customs Declaration form and fill out both sides.
• When you arrive at a port of entry in the United States, you will be inspected by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer. Be prepared to tell the officer the purpose of your trip and those items that you purchased or obtained abroad.
